VAHC Mountain Valley District – Eagle Scout Checklist

Eagle Scout Project Approval

1. Select a Beneficiary & Define Your Project

  • Choose a project that benefits a religious institution, school, or community organization (not Scouting-related).
  • Ensure your project meets the Eagle Scout Service Project Workbook requirements.

2. Develop Your Project Proposal

  • Use the most up-to-date Eagle Scout Service Project Workbook (available at Scouting Advancement).
  • Clearly outline the project’s purpose, scope, and leadership roles.

3. Get Initial Feedback

  • Discuss your project with your Scoutmaster, Eagle Coach, or unit leader.
  • Seek input from the project beneficiary to refine your proposal.

4. Submit Your Proposal for Approval

  • Obtain signatures from:
    • Beneficiary representative
    • Unit leader (Scoutmaster)
    • Unit committee chair
  • Present your proposal to the district or council advancement committee for final approval.

5. Plan & Execute Your Project

  • Create a detailed project plan, including:
    • Materials needed
    • Budget
    • Timeline
  • Lead others in completing the project, following your workbook documentation.

6. Complete Your Project Report

  • Document your project’s results, challenges, and lessons learned in the Eagle Scout Service Project Workbook.
  • Obtain the beneficiary’s signature to confirm completion.

Eagle Scout Rank Application

1. Verify All Requirements Are Met

  • Ensure you’ve completed:
    • Active participation
    • Demonstrated Scout spirit
    • Required merit badges
    • Leadership role
    • Service project
    • Unit leader conference

2. Fill Out the Eagle Scout Rank Application

  • Use the most current official application from Scouting Advancement.
  • Include accurate dates from Scoutbook or Scouting.org to avoid delays.

3. Gather Required Documents

  • Statement of ambitions and life purpose
  • List of leadership positions, honors, and awards
  • Completed Eagle Scout Service Project Workbook

4. Obtain Required Signatures

  • Candidate (you)
  • Unit leader
  • Unit committee chair

5. Request References

  • Ask the four individuals listed on your application to provide references.
  • References can be submitted by letter, email, or other approved methods (confidential).
  • If references are not received after multiple attempts, the Board of Review can still proceed—be ready to explain your efforts.

Scheduling Your Eagle Board of Review

1. Coordinate with Your District or Council Advancement Chair

  • The advancement chair schedules your Board of Review after verifying your application.

2. Prepare for Your Board of Review

  • Wear your full official Scout uniform.
  • Be ready to discuss your Scouting journey, leadership roles, and project outcomes.

3. Participate in the Board of Review

  • A panel (including at least one district or council representative) will:
    • Verify that you’ve met all requirements.
    • Discuss your Scouting experience.

4. Receive Your Board Decision

  • If approved, your application is signed and forwarded to the National Advancement Program Team.

5. National Review & Credentials

  • Once the National Council approves your application, credentials are sent back to the local council.
  • You can now plan your Eagle Court of Honor! 🎉
